Can Cooper Really Fill His Father’s Shoes?

Landman Season 3 Faces A Major Challenge As Cooper Steps Into Tommy’s Shadow

Landman Season 3 is set to look very different after the Season 2 finale shifted Tommy Norris away from the center of his own oil operation. While Billy Bob Thornton’s character remains the show’s lead, the story is clearly positioning his son Cooper as the next generation of the Norris family business.

That transition could create a serious problem for the series: Cooper may not have the same presence that has made Tommy such a compelling character.

Landman's Tommy Replacement Could Officially Doom Season 3

Tommy Is Stepping Back — But Not Leaving

The Season 2 finale, “Tragedy and Flies,” ended with Tommy launching his own company using Gallino’s financial backing. The new venture brings together people Tommy trusts, including Nate as treasurer, Rebecca as chief counsel and T.L. returning from retirement to help oversee drilling operations.

Cooper, meanwhile, has been placed in a position of greater responsibility. Tommy has effectively handed his son a leadership role, setting up a future in which Cooper could eventually inherit the oil empire his father built.

Paramount+ has confirmed that Thornton will return as Tommy for Season 3, alongside returning stars including Demi Moore, Andy Garcia, Ali Larter, Sam Elliott and Jacob Lofland. Michael Kelly has also joined the cast as William Crockett, the leader of the world’s largest oil management firm.

So Tommy is not disappearing. The concern is what happens if the series gradually moves him further into the background.

Landman Season 3 Is Replacing Billy Bob Thornton's Tommy Norris

Cooper Has A Difficult Act To Follow

Cooper has shown that he can handle responsibility in the oil business. In the second season, he increasingly steps into leadership, including taking charge at a drilling site. The finale then pushes that progression even further.

But being positioned as Tommy’s successor is very different from carrying the series.

Tommy has become the character around whom Landman‘s professional and personal chaos revolves. Thornton brings a combination of confidence, humour and Southern charm that gives the character an unmistakable presence.

That charisma has also helped the show remain entertaining when its storylines become less convincing. Cooper, by comparison, is written as much more serious and restrained. His position as Tommy’s privileged son also makes his struggles harder to connect with in the same way.

If Season 3 increasingly asks Cooper to carry the narrative while Tommy takes a backseat, the series risks losing the personality that originally made it stand out.

Tommy Is More Than Just The Lead Character

The bigger issue is that replacing Tommy would not simply mean replacing one protagonist with another.

Landman has built much of its identity around Thornton’s performance. Tommy operates between oil executives, workers, family members and dangerous business interests, giving the series a natural center even when its various storylines move in different directions.

That makes Cooper an especially difficult successor.

The series could potentially shift its focus to characters such as Angela, Ainsley, Nate, Rebecca or T.L., but none has the same combination of narrative importance and screen presence as Tommy.

Season 3 therefore has to balance two competing ideas: allowing Cooper to grow into his own character while making sure Tommy remains an essential part of the story.

Could Landman Eventually Become A Franchise?

The setup also creates possibilities for the future of Landman beyond Season 3.

The series could eventually follow the broader path of Yellowstone, which has expanded its original story through multiple spin-offs. Paramount has plenty of potential directions available, including a corporate drama centered on Cami, a prequel exploring T.L.’s earlier career or a future story following Cooper and Ariana as they continue Tommy’s legacy.

But any expansion would face the same challenge: Landman‘s appeal is closely connected to Billy Bob Thornton.

A spin-off could work if it builds a strong identity of its own. Simply moving the spotlight from Tommy to another member of the Norris family, however, may not be enough.

Season 3 Has To Find The Right Balance

The Season 2 finale clearly established Cooper as someone capable of taking on more responsibility, while Tommy begins building a business where he can operate with greater independence. Paramount+ has also confirmed that Season 3 is on the way, although a release date has not yet been announced.

That gives the new season an interesting challenge.

Cooper needs room to grow, but Landman cannot afford to lose the character who has been its defining presence. The most effective version of Season 3 may therefore be one where Cooper steps forward without Tommy stepping too far back.

Because whatever direction the Norris family takes next, the series still has to answer one crucial question: can Landman evolve without losing what made it work in the first place?
