Netflix Is Bringing One Of Scotland’s Most Devastating Tragedies Back To The Screen — And This Six-Part Drama Revisits A Story That Still Hurts Decades Later. Few true stories carry the emotional weight of the Lockerbie bombing. Set against the loss of 270 lives, the drama follows the massive investigation that unfolded after Pan Am Flight 103 was destroyed over Scotland, as investigators across countries worked to uncover what happened. With Connor Swindells, Eddie Marsan and Patrick J. Adams leading the cast, the series explores grief, loss, unanswered questions and the relentless search for justice behind one of Scotland’s darkest chapters.

The Bombing of Pan Am 103: Netflix Brings Powerful Lockerbie Drama To A Global Audience

Few tragedies in Scotland’s modern history carry the weight of the Lockerbie bombing. Now, a six-part drama about the disaster and the extraordinary investigation that followed is reaching a worldwide audience on Netflix.

The Bombing of Pan Am 103 premiered on BBC One in May 2025 before arriving globally on Netflix on July 30, 2026. Based on the real events surrounding the bombing, the series looks beyond the initial disaster to examine the enormous Scottish-American investigation that followed and the families’ long search for justice.

Rather than treating the bombing solely as a disaster story, the drama places the investigation at its centre, following the detectives, FBI agents and other figures who spent years trying to establish what happened and identify those responsible.

The Lockerbie Tragedy

On December 21, 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 exploded over the Scottish town of Lockerbie.

The flight had been travelling from London Heathrow toward New York before continuing to Detroit when a bomb exploded in its hold. All 243 passengers and 16 crew members were killed, while falling wreckage and the resulting destruction claimed the lives of another 11 people on the ground in Lockerbie.

In total, 270 people died, including 43 British citizens and 190 Americans. The bombing became the deadliest act of terrorism on British soil and left a lasting mark on Lockerbie, Scotland and families across multiple countries.

The scale of what followed was equally extraordinary. Police Scotland describes the case as the largest terrorist and murder investigation ever undertaken in Scotland, while the production itself follows the investigation across Scotland, the United States and Malta and eventually to the trial at Camp Zeist in 2000.

A Massive International Investigation

That investigation provides the dramatic foundation for the series.

Scottish detectives and US law enforcement were forced to work together across borders, attempting to reconstruct what had happened from an enormous amount of evidence scattered across the crash site and beyond.

The series follows that process through the perspectives of investigators on both sides of the Atlantic. Netflix describes it as a story of collaboration between Scottish police and US law enforcement, alongside the families’ continuing quest for justice.

The six episodes allow the investigation to unfold over time. Early episodes focus on the immediate aftermath and the search for evidence, before the case develops through forensic discoveries, intelligence sharing and international leads.

Later in the series, Scottish detectives travel to Washington, D.C., while another breakthrough sends investigators to Malta. The story ultimately moves forward through more than a decade of investigation before suspects face trial.

The real investigation was enormous. Police Scotland records that it involved 15,000 witness statements and was jointly handled by the FBI and Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary.

Connor Swindells Leads The Scottish Investigation

At the heart of the drama is Connor Swindells, who plays Detective Sergeant Ed McCusker, a Scottish police officer drawn into the investigation.

Netflix describes McCusker as a family man whose restrained personality makes it difficult for him to acknowledge the personal impact of the case. Swindells was also able to meet the real Ed McCusker while preparing for the role, drawing on his recollections of the events and investigation.

Patrick J. Adams, best known for Suits, plays FBI Special Agent Dick Marquise, who leads the American response to the bombing and works to coordinate with his Scottish counterparts despite resistance from his superiors.

Adams has also spoken about having a personal memory of the tragedy. He was seven years old and living in the UK when the bombing happened, later describing it as a monumental story and historic moment.

Eddie Marsan plays FBI Special Agent Tom Thurman, an explosives expert sent from the United States to Lockerbie. His forensic examination of the crash site becomes an important part of establishing that an explosive brought down the aircraft.

The main cast also includes Merritt Wever, Peter Mullan, Tony Curran, Phyllis Logan, Lauren Lyle, Nicholas Gleaves and James Harkness.

The Human Cost Behind The Investigation

While the investigation drives the drama, the series does not lose sight of the people left behind.

Lockerbie was a small Scottish community suddenly transformed by an international tragedy. Families from across the world lost loved ones, while residents of the town were directly affected when parts of the aircraft came down over their homes.

That human cost gives the investigation a significance beyond the search for evidence. Every breakthrough is connected to families who have spent years waiting for answers.

The production team also approached the subject with an awareness of its particular importance to Scotland. Director Michael Keillor, who is Scottish, has spoken about remembering the bombing himself and the responsibility involved in telling a story that remains deeply embedded in the country’s history.

The series was developed from extensive research and interviews with investigators and families affected by the tragedy.

A Drama Built Around The Search For Answers

The Bombing of Pan Am 103 is therefore structured differently from a conventional crime thriller.

The bombing itself provides the devastating starting point, but the story quickly expands into a sprawling international investigation. Evidence has to be gathered, agencies have to cooperate and investigators have to determine which clues could finally lead them to those responsible.

Netflix’s episode descriptions show that progression clearly. Evidence from the crash site points investigators toward a bomb, radio fragments help identify the bomb maker, a luggage list sends detectives to Malta and later discoveries expose mistakes made during the investigation.

By the final episode, the story has moved more than a decade beyond the night of the bombing, with suspects facing trial while key witnesses and the victims’ families remain central to the question of whether justice will finally be achieved.

The Lockerbie bombing has already been explored through documentaries and other television dramas, but this production takes a particular interest in the investigators and the enormous international effort that followed.

That approach gives the series room to explore not only what happened on December 21, 1988, but also the years of forensic work, international cooperation and uncertainty that followed.

The result is a drama about a tragedy, but also about persistence: the investigators who continued searching for answers, the families who continued seeking justice and a community that had to live with the consequences.

The production comes from World Productions, in association with MGM Television and Night Train Media. Jonathan Lee is the creator and lead writer, with Gillian Roger Park also writing, while Michael Keillor directs all six episodes.
