Heavy rain and high winds descended on San Salvador – the capital city of Central American country El Salvador – earlier this week.

El Salvador failed to qualify for this summer‘s tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

But World Cup fever has still swept the nation, and the giant ball was on display at the Bambu shopping centre to mark the occasion.

That is where it was ripped from its anchors, sparking chaos on the streets.

Wind and rain propelled it across four lanes of traffic in a bizarre scene.

After narrowly missing one driver who slammed the brakes on, the ball smashed into a palm tree and was sent spinning into the path of motorists travelling in the opposite direction.

It missed one car but then ploughed straight into a truck, hitting it head-on and then bouncing onto its roof.

It appeared that the humongous but lightweight ball did no damage to the vehicle.

And, thankfully, no injuries have been reported.

Fans in El Salvador will be keeping a close eye on a tournament they have failed to qualify for since 1982, and have only featured in twice before.
