“IT TOOK JUST SECONDS FOR EVERYTHING TO UNRAVEL.” A World Cup celebration has suddenly turned into a major international controversy after a video appearing to show a Mexican trade leader making a gesture toward a South Korean fan exploded across social media.

This is unacceptable.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has brought many fans together. However, it has also been proven that not everybody should have a camera in front of them.

A local Mexican trade group leader put himself in a complex position. Out of nowhere, he made a racist gesture at a South Korean influencer. While Mexico awaits the Asian team for their Thursday matchup, plenty of fans watched Son Heung-min and Co. take on Czechia on Thursday.

Yoo Su-jin, an influencer with nearly nine million combined followers on TikTok and YouTube, recorded herself after her national team beat the European squad.

College of Topographic and Geomatic Engineers of Jalisco President Ulises Bernal couldn’t help himself and made a racist gesture behind her. Bernal, a government trade group leader, made several hand signs while laughing in the background of the video.

He then put his fingers in his eyes to make the racist gesture, chuckled and leaned back into his seat. The influencer looked shocked after that moment.

The New York Post reported that the government trade association lamented the incident.

“We are deeply saddened by what is happening regarding this incident,” they said.

Additionally, they announced that “the Honor and Justice Committee is meeting this same day” and that Bernal would be “removed from office.”

Soccer often unites people. It is sad that others, including those in positions of power, have questionable behaviors.
