The Whisper Man ending explained: Netflix thriller reveals the killer’s identity

The Whisper Man builds its mystery around a chilling question: who is carrying on the Whisper Man’s crimes?

The Netflix thriller initially points toward the possibility that someone connected to the original killer has escaped capture. But as Tom Kennedy and his father, retired detective Pete Willis, dig deeper into the case, the truth becomes much more disturbing.

Ten years before the events of the film, Pete, played by Robert De Niro, arrested the notorious Whisper Man, Frank Carter, portrayed by Michael Keaton. Carter had murdered several children and was eventually sent to prison.

A decade later, Pete has retired from the police. His quiet life is interrupted when his estranged son, Tom Kennedy, played by Adam Scott, asks for his help.

Tom has recently moved to a new area with his young son Jake following the death of his wife. Their new beginning quickly turns into a nightmare when Jake is kidnapped by someone apparently recreating the crimes that made the Whisper Man infamous.

With Detective Amanda Beck, played by Michelle Monaghan, joining the investigation, Tom and Pete begin searching for Jake. Their investigation eventually brings them back to the original killer, Frank Carter, who provides information from behind bars.

Who is the new Whisper Man?

For much of the film, the investigation revolves around the possibility that Carter had an accomplice who escaped justice and is now continuing his work.

That theory eventually falls apart.

Tom and Pete discover the remains of the fifth victim from Carter’s original series of murders hidden inside a concealed section of Tom’s house. They also find the body of Dominic Barnett, the home’s former resident.

Their investigation leads them to Norman Collins, a neighbour with an intense interest in crime.

Collins admits that Carter had directed him toward Barnett because Collins wanted access to Tony’s remains. After Barnett mocked him and called him a “peeping Tom”, Collins killed him in a fit of rage.

Collins also reveals that Carter gave him information about Tony’s remains in return for helping him establish a connection with someone outside prison.

Before Collins can explain everything to Tom, Beck and Pete, he takes his own life.

The investigators are nevertheless able to piece together what Carter was trying to accomplish. They work out who he would want to contact and, more importantly, who would have a reason to recreate his crimes.

The answer is Frank Carter’s own son, Francis Carter Jr., played by Owen Teague.

Francis Carter Jr. is behind the murders

Francis is revealed to be the new Whisper Man.

His motivation makes the case even more disturbing. He has been carrying out the murders in the hope of gaining the approval of his father, the same man who abused and traumatised him during his childhood.

Tom, Pete and Beck eventually track the investigation to the home of Francis’ psychologist, hoping the therapist may have information about his whereabouts.

Instead, they discover Francis himself, along with the mutilated body of his therapist, both inside a barrel.

There is some relief when they realise Jake is also there.

Beck confronts Francis and manages to fight him off long enough for Jake to escape. Francis, however, manages to stab Beck before pursuing the boy.

Pete then arrives and confronts Francis.

The younger man attacks him as well, stabbing Pete and inflicting a fatal wound. Even as he is dying, Pete focuses on protecting his grandson. He tells Jake to run, then manages to fight back against Francis and leave him incapacitated until the police arrive.

Beck and Francis both survive the confrontation.

Pete does not.

His final actions allow Jake to escape and ultimately save his grandson’s life, making his death the film’s most tragic sacrifice.

What happens to the mysterious girl in blue?

Jake’s experiences throughout the film introduce another unsettling mystery.

He repeatedly sees a young girl wearing a blue jumper. Her identity is never immediately clear, leaving viewers to wonder whether she is real, a ghost or simply something Jake is imagining.

The mystery takes on a new meaning when Tom looks through old photographs and notices an image of his late wife as a child.

She looks remarkably similar to the girl Jake has been seeing.

The film leaves the connection deliberately open, allowing viewers to question exactly what Jake has encountered and whether the girl is meant to be understood as something supernatural or as a product of his imagination.

Frank Carter’s final twist

The darkest moment comes after Francis has been captured.

Frank Carter finally gets the reunion with his son that he appears to have wanted. But rather than embracing Francis, Carter turns on him.

In prison, he covers Francis’ face with a shirt and strangles him.

The significance is particularly grim: Carter uses the same method associated with his original murders, this time killing his own son.

Francis spent the film committing horrific crimes in the hope of earning approval from the father who abused him. In the end, that approval never comes. Carter instead repeats his cycle of violence against Francis himself.

With Pete dead, Francis arrested and Carter having killed his own son, the film closes on one final, deeply disturbing revelation.
