All Creatures Great and Small’s Charlotte Star Has Two Very Famous Parents
Fans of All Creatures Great and Small may know Gaia Wise as Charlotte Beauvoir, Tristan Farnon’s new love interest, but the actress has an impressive family connection of her own.
The 26-year-old London-born star is the daughter of two highly recognisable actors: Oscar-winning actress Dame Emma Thompson and actor Greg Wise.
Wise has been making her own mark on screen, including her role as Charlotte in the Channel 5 period drama. With the show’s seventh season now underway, her character’s relationship with Tristan, played by Callum Woodhouse, is becoming an increasingly important part of the story.
Charlotte and Tristan’s relationship continues to develop
Season 7 of All Creatures Great and Small returned to Channel 5 on Thursday, September 17, taking viewers into the spring of 1946.
The latest series picks up after the Second World War, with life at Skeldale House entering a new chapter. James Herriot, played by Nicholas Ralph, is now an established vet as well as Helen’s husband, while the Farnon brothers are dealing with changes of their own.
Siegfried Farnon, played by Samuel West, has begun a relationship with Dorothy, the long-time friend of Mrs Hall, played by Maimie McCoy and Anna Madeley respectively.
Tristan, meanwhile, is continuing his romance with Charlotte Beauvoir.
The pair first crossed paths in Season 6 when Tristan was called to examine Charlotte’s beloved horse. Their connection grew as they discovered that they had both been deeply affected by their wartime experiences.
Tristan had served on the front line, while Charlotte had served with the Auxiliary Territorial Service in Sicily, where she cared for animals.
Their backgrounds could hardly be more different. Charlotte comes from an upper-class family and is the daughter of General Beauvoir, played by Jonathan Hyde. Tristan’s life, by comparison, has been centred around the much more modest surroundings of Skeldale House.
Despite those differences, their relationship has continued to develop.
Woodhouse has previously spoken warmly about working with Wise, describing their on-screen relationship as one of his favourite romances he has played. He also praised Wise as a wonderful actress and said their chemistry made the partnership particularly enjoyable to play.
Season 7 continues to explore where that relationship might go as the characters adjust to life after the war. Wise remains part of the returning cast as Charlotte.
Who is Gaia Wise?
Wise may be best known to many viewers now as Charlotte, but All Creatures Great and Small is far from her only television credit.
She has made guest appearances in crime dramas including Silent Witness and The Chelsea Detective. Her film credits include A Walk in the Woods, based on Bill Bryson’s book, and the suspense thriller Dead of Winter.
Both films also feature her mother, Emma Thompson.
That family connection is particularly notable given Thompson’s long and celebrated career.
Emma Thompson is Gaia Wise’s mother
Emma Thompson, now 67, is one of Britain’s best-known screen actresses and an Academy Award winner.
Her career has included a wide range of roles across period dramas, comedies and major Hollywood productions. Among her best-known performances are Margaret Schlegel in Howards End, Elinor Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility, Karen in Love Actually, Professor Sybil Trelawney in the Harry Potter films, Agent O in Men in Black and the title character in Nanny McPhee.
Thompson’s connection to Sense and Sensibility is particularly significant to her family story.
She met her future husband, Greg Wise, while working on the 1995 period drama. Wise played John Willoughby in the film, while Thompson portrayed Elinor Dashwood.
The couple married in 2003.
They welcomed Gaia in 1999 and later formally adopted Tindyebwa Agaba, four years after Gaia’s birth.
Gaia’s father is also a familiar face
Gaia’s father, Greg Wise, has built a substantial acting career of his own.
The 60-year-old actor, who is originally from Newcastle, has appeared in films and television productions including Johnny English, Walking on Sunshine and Military Wives.
He is also well known for playing Lord Louis Mountbatten in the first two seasons of Netflix’s The Crown.
That means Wise grew up with two parents who had established careers in the entertainment industry, although she has continued to build her own screen résumé.
Her role as Charlotte in All Creatures Great and Small now gives her a prominent place in one of Channel 5’s returning dramas. Season 7 also introduces Caolan McCarthy as rival vet Granville Bennett, bringing a new professional challenge to the veterinary practice in Darrowby.
