Former Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner has opened up about a frightening medical episode during his tenure that left him struggling to breathe and fearing he was experiencing a heart attack or stroke.
Writing in his upcoming memoir Drive, set for release on October 22, the 52-year-old reflects on his two decades leading the Milton Keynes squad—a reign that yielded six World Constructors’ Championships and eight World Drivers’ Championships—while revealing the personal toll the intense pressure of Formula One took on his physical and mental wellbeing.

A Frightening Episode at Hockenheim

Horner recounted that the alarming episode took place during the 2014 German Grand Prix weekend at Hockenheim. Under oppressive, stormy weather, he suddenly found himself unable to breathe naturally while managing the team from the pit wall.
“I remember everything tightening around me on what was a thundery day,” Horner wrote. “The air was muggy and close, and throughout the session I became weirdly aware of my own breathing. It felt laboured. Every exhale and inhale became a mechanical and conscious effort, rather than a natural event that took place without thought.”
The symptoms escalated quickly into acute physical distress:
“Then I became light-headed and my chest tightened. After a while, everything returned to normal. But when the same thing happened a couple of days later, I checked Google and wondered whether I was having a heart attack or a stroke – I had just turned forty, after all.”
Concerned by the recurring symptoms, Horner consulted Red Bull’s team doctor. After a medical evaluation cleared him of any cardiovascular or neurological damage, the physician diagnosed the episode as a severe panic attack.

Taking It as a Wake-Up Call

Horner admitted that the diagnosis forced him to confront the immense psychological weight he had been carrying as the head of an elite championship team. Recognizing that his body was sending an unmistakable warning signal, he made conscious lifestyle changes to regulate the stress:

  • Regular Physical Fitness: Leaning into distance running as an outlet for high-pressure work weeks.
  • Charity Challenges: Horner recalled taking part in the Silverstone half-marathon alongside Adrian Newey and Fabiana Ecclestone to support the Wings for Life charity—joking that his only bruised pride came from being overtaken by a runner dressed in a carrot costume.
  • Mental Reset: Prioritizing time outdoors, regular exercise, and learning to let go of variables outside his direct control.
“Recognizing the cause enabled me to quickly identify the issue; my body was giving me a warning,” Horner reflected. “More exercise and letting go of things beyond my control gave me a much healthier outlook.”
