When Mica Miller was found dead at a North Carolina state park on April 27, 2024, her death was initially ruled a suicide. But the case quickly drew national attention as more details surfaced about Mica’s claims that she was being targeted in a stalking plot.
A month before her death, Mica had told police that she was “afraid for her life.” She was married to John-Paul Miller, the pastor of her family’s church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Now, a new three-part documentary series is taking a closer look at the circumstances surrounding Mica’s final months, the allegations she made before her death, and the questions that continue to surround her story.
A closer look at Mica’s final months
Death of the Pastor’s Wife premieres Aug. 26 and features never-before-seen footage alongside firsthand accounts from Mica’s friends and family. Some of those closest to her are speaking publicly about her life and experiences for the first time.
The series is directed by Julia Willoughby Nason and Mike Gasparro, whose previous projects include Murdaugh Murders and American Murder: Gabby Petito.
Executive producers on the project include Tom Cappello, Alana Goldstein and Keely Walker Muse of Crazy Legs Productions; Nason and Gasparro of The Cinemart; and Yotam Guendelman of Silvio Productions.
Giving Mica’s story a voice
For Nason and Gasparro, one of the most compelling elements of Mica’s story was her repeated effort to make others understand what she believed she was experiencing.
“What stayed with us about Mica’s story was how hard she seemed to be fighting to be heard,” the directors say.
They wanted the documentary to take a close look at those experiences while allowing the people who knew Mica best to remember her in their own words. The filmmakers say the series will examine difficult questions surrounding her story while keeping her voice and the concerns she tried to communicate at the center of the narrative.
Goldstein says the project also became deeply personal for the production team, even though they never met Mica themselves. Through conversations with her family and friends, she says, they came to understand more about Mica’s warmth and character, as well as the pain she experienced.
“Our goal at Crazy Legs is to tell a deeply personal portrait of Mica — honoring her voice, uncovering the realities of emotional abuse and coercive control, and remembering her for the light she shared with the world through her faith,” Goldstein says.
A trailer for Death of the Pastor’s Wife provides an early look at the three-part documentary. The series premieres Aug. 26 and is expected to bring renewed attention to Mica’s story and the continuing search for answers surrounding her death.
