Outlander: Blood of My Blood fans have the same complaint after difficult Season 2 premiere

Fans of Outlander: Blood of My Blood have made one thing clear after watching the Season 2 premiere: the latest chapter may have been more painful to watch than they expected.
The prequel returned with its second season on September 19 in the UK on MGM+ via Prime Video, following its US premiere on September 18. The first episode, titled Remembrance Day, immediately plunged the show’s central couples back into separation, heartbreak and uncertainty.
After waiting more than a year for the story to continue, viewers were quickly confronted with one of the show’s most difficult storylines yet.
Henry and Julia are separated again
The premiere picks up with Henry Beauchamp, played by Jeremy Irvine, and his wife Julia, portrayed by Hermione Corfield, facing another devastating separation.
Henry has gone back through the stones without Julia, leaving the couple divided once again. He eventually finds himself in an asylum in Inverness, where his claims about time travel are dismissed and he is treated as though he is suffering from mental illness.
The scenes become particularly difficult when Henry is subjected to shock therapy. The treatment has serious consequences for him, including the loss of important memories, making his situation even more heartbreaking.
Meanwhile, Julia is left behind in the 18th century with their baby William and must deal with the consequences of Henry’s disappearance.
The episode also brought a surprise for longtime Outlander viewers. Henry is visited by a younger version of Reverend Wakefield, played by Tom Ashley. The character attempts to provide Henry with some comfort while he is confined in the asylum.
Later, Reverend Wakefield returns home and discusses Henry’s situation with his housekeeper, Mrs Graham, played by Emma Hartley-Miller. Both characters are familiar to fans of the original Outlander series, making their appearance an important connection between the prequel and the main show.
Fans are struggling with the constant separation
Despite the excitement surrounding the return of Blood of My Blood, much of the online reaction to the premiere focused on how difficult the episode was to watch.
On Reddit, viewers repeatedly singled out the separation of Henry and Julia, as well as the asylum storyline, as particularly upsetting.
One viewer admitted they hoped the episode had delivered all of the season’s trauma at once, saying the asylum storyline was simply “so hard to watch.”
Another agreed, saying they hoped the show would move away from the asylum storyline quickly because it was “too difficult to watch.”
Others were frustrated that Henry and Julia were separated almost immediately after the season began. One fan described the opening as odd and questioned the decision to put Henry through another traumatic ordeal.
Another viewer compared the new season to the first, arguing that the characters appeared to have returned to a familiar cycle in which the couples are separated and forced to endure more suffering.
The frustration was not limited to Henry and Julia. Another fan said they had tuned in expecting a feel-good love story, only to find all four central characters separated.
That sense of disappointment was echoed by another viewer who said they had primarily watched the prequel because of Claire’s parents, Henry and Julia, particularly because the backstory of Jamie’s parents, Brian and Ellen, is already known from Outlander. Seeing the couples repeatedly torn apart made the viewing experience particularly frustrating for them.
Some fans think the prequel is missing the lighter side of Outlander
The reaction also touched on a broader criticism of Blood of My Blood.
One viewer argued that the prequel lacks some of the “joy, happiness, romance, magic, and whimsy” they associate with Outlander. Instead, they felt the series had become dominated by darker and more depressing storylines, with Henry’s scenes in particular proving difficult to endure.
That response reflects one of the central tensions of the prequel. While Blood of My Blood is built around the love stories of two generations connected to Claire and Jamie, its characters are repeatedly forced apart by war, time travel, family conflict and circumstances beyond their control.
Season 2’s official description similarly makes separation a major part of the story, with both young couples facing new forces that threaten to keep them apart.
The premiere was especially emotional for Outlander fans
For some viewers, the emotional impact went beyond the events happening to Henry and Julia in the episode itself.
One fan said the show felt particularly sad because of what viewers already know from Outlander. With no reunion between Claire and her parents in Season 8, their separation in Blood of My Blood carries an additional emotional weight for longtime fans.
Another viewer even came up with a particularly tragic theory about Henry’s future.
They wondered whether Henry could remain in the asylum for decades and eventually cross paths with Claire later in life, perhaps while she is working as a nurse or doctor, without either of them realizing who the other is. The viewer acknowledged that the idea was only a theory and hoped the show would not take the story in such a heartbreaking direction.
For now, however, Henry remains trapped in the 20th century while Julia is left behind in the past.
The premiere also expands the connection between Blood of My Blood and the original Outlander through the younger versions of Reverend Wakefield and Mrs Graham. Their involvement could prove important as Henry searches for a way out of his situation.
When is the next episode of Blood of My Blood Season 2?
Outlander: Blood of My Blood Season 2 is being released weekly.
In the UK, new episodes arrive on Saturdays on MGM+ via Prime Video. The second episode, The Veil of Time, is scheduled for September 26, while the US release comes on September 25 on STARZ.
The second season will contain 10 episodes, with the finale, Twelfth Night, scheduled for November 20 in the US.
For now, fans are left waiting to see whether Henry can escape his asylum confinement, whether Julia can protect herself and William, and whether the season will finally give its separated couples a chance to reunite.
