GEORGE RUSSELL LEFT EXPOSED! KIMI ANTONELLI’S BRUTAL MERCEDES STATEMENT LEAVES HIS TEAM-MATE WITHOUT THE BACKING HE NEEDS — AND THE FALLOUT COULD CUT DEEP! George Russell has found himself under fresh scrutiny after being overshadowed by rising Mercedes star Kimi Antonelli — but the real sting comes from the lack of support following the humiliating comparison. With Antonelli making headlines and Russell facing uncomfortable questions, the spotlight is now on where the balance of confidence and backing at Mercedes truly lies. For a driver fighting to establish his position at the team, this latest setback could carry a significance far beyond one result. The silence surrounding Russell may be the detail that hurts most.

George Russell’s hopes of becoming Formula One world champion have suffered a major setback, with a new reader poll suggesting that most fans doubt he will ever claim the sport’s biggest prize.

The Mercedes driver entered 2026 with what appeared to be his strongest opportunity yet. The Silver Arrows have established a commanding advantage over their rivals, sitting 134 points clear of Ferrari in the constructors’ standings with no more than six rounds remaining.

But while Mercedes are closing in on their first constructors’ championship since 2021, it is Russell’s teenage team-mate Kimi Antonelli who has emerged as the leading contender for individual glory.

Russell opened the season with a victory, but Antonelli responded with a remarkable run of five consecutive wins while still just 19 years old. He has since added three more Grand Prix victories, taking his tally to eight for the season.

Russell, meanwhile, has managed only three wins, including his triumph in Baku last month, and now trails Antonelli by 102 points.

74% OF FANS DOUBT RUSSELL’S TITLE CHANCES

A poll conducted by Express Sport asked readers whether Russell would ever win the Formula One world championship.

Of the 1,484 people who responded, 74% — or 1,092 voters — said they did not believe he would ever become world champion.

Just 26%, equivalent to 392 respondents, remained confident that the British driver would eventually secure the title.

The results reflect growing doubts about Russell’s ability to convert a competitive car into a championship-winning campaign, particularly with Antonelli currently outperforming him in the same Mercedes machinery.

However, the poll represents the opinions of participating readers rather than a definitive assessment of Russell’s future prospects.

ANTONELLI COULD SEAL THE TITLE IN AUSTIN

Russell’s deficit has become so substantial that Antonelli could mathematically clinch the championship as early as the next round in Austin, depending on the results.

To secure the title at the Circuit of the Americas, Antonelli would need to leave the weekend 125 points ahead of Russell. That scenario would require a victory for the Italian and a finish that leaves Russell scoring no more than two points.

Even if the championship remains undecided after Texas, Russell faces a difficult task closing the gap with only a handful of races left.

His position has also been complicated by engine reliability problems, which have forced Mercedes to use additional power-unit components beyond his annual allocation.

MORE ENGINE PENALTIES COULD COMPLICATE RUSSELL’S FIGHT

Russell confirmed that further engine penalties are likely after repeated failures left him without enough available components to complete the season without exceeding his allocation.

Explaining why he accepted a penalty in Singapore, he said the original plan had been to take it in Austin, where overtaking is easier than at the Marina Bay circuit.

“I knew I was going to have a penalty. The plan was always to go in Austin, and obviously Singapore is the second hardest track to overtake on on the calendars,” Russell explained.

“But we have no engines because of all of the various failures, so there was no engine I could have reverted to from earlier in the season. With this failure, I had to take it.”

Russell also explained that Mercedes had to weigh the risks of continuing with a degrading engine against accepting another grid penalty.

“We don’t have the [upgrade] this weekend, and because there are seven races remaining, you can either choose to roll the dice and hope it lasts for seven races, but also suffer a performance offset [as the engine degrades], or just accept I’ll be taking another penalty.”

He later indicated that Las Vegas, a circuit where overtaking opportunities are more plentiful, was the likely venue for another penalty.

RUSSELL’S NEXT CHALLENGE

Russell will have another opportunity to fight for the championship when the points reset next season, but there is no guarantee Mercedes will retain its current performance advantage.

Max Verstappen could also become a factor if Red Bull continues to improve, adding another potential challenger to the title picture.

For now, Mercedes remain on course for the constructors’ crown, while Antonelli has put himself in a commanding position in the drivers’ standings.

Russell has contributed to Mercedes’ success, but the gap between the team-mates has turned what many expected to be his breakthrough title campaign into a battle to salvage the season — and intensified the debate over whether he can eventually become world champion.
