PIERS MORGAN REFUSES TO BACK DOWN AFTER EARL SPENCER APOLOGY — ‘THAT’S NOT ENOUGH’ AS LEGAL FIGHT OVER DIANA BOOK ESCALATES

Piers Morgan has made it clear that Earl Spencer’s apology will not bring their bitter dispute to an end, as the broadcaster presses ahead with legal action over claims made about him in the Earl’s new book.

Spencer issued a formal apology after acknowledging that he had made an incorrect assumption about Morgan’s involvement in the publication of intrusive photographs of Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1993.

In Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, Spencer wrote that Morgan was working for the Daily Mirror when the photographs were published and suggested that his reaction to being excluded from Diana’s funeral was linked to guilt over the images.

There was one major problem with that account.

The photographs were published by the Sunday Mirror on November 7, 1993, when Morgan was working as a showbiz columnist for The Sun. He did not join the Daily Mirror until October 1995, becoming its editor later that year.

Spencer’s spokesperson subsequently said the Earl’s assumption was incorrect and issued an apology to Morgan.

“As an historian, accuracy is important to Earl Spencer,” the statement said. “He therefore wishes to clarify that his assumption was incorrect. Earl Spencer apologises to Mr Morgan for this error.”

Morgan, however, has rejected the idea that the apology settles the matter.

Speaking on Piers Morgan Uncensored, he described the claims as “fabricated inaccuracies” and said they struck at the heart of Spencer’s credibility.

He also objected to the book’s description of him as having “snarled with annoyance” during a phone call in which Spencer allegedly told him not to attend Diana’s funeral.

Morgan insisted that the account was false and said the timeline surrounding the photographs was easy to prove.

He later announced on X that he would continue pursuing legal action against Spencer and publisher Penguin, seeking to have the disputed claims removed from the book and damages paid to the King’s Trust.

In an ITV News interview, Morgan said he was “spitting blood” over the claims and acknowledged Spencer had admitted his mistake, but added bluntly: “That’s not enough, I’m sorry.”

Morgan said his lawyers had been instructed to send a legal letter demanding that the claims be withdrawn.

He also raised a broader concern, questioning whether the error involving him could indicate other inaccuracies elsewhere in the memoir.

The dispute comes as Swan Song reaches readers, with Spencer’s wider claims about Diana, King Charles and the aftermath of her death already generating intense scrutiny.

For Morgan, however, the immediate battle is now focused on one specific passage — and Spencer’s apology appears to have done little to cool the row.
