Something terrifying is moving beneath the waters of Newfoundland — and a small fishing community is about to find itself fighting for survival.

Netflix’s upcoming six-part limited series Below stars Josh Hartnett as Calvin Penney, a fisherman haunted by his father’s mysterious death, alongside Charlie Heaton of Stranger Things and Mackenzie Davis of Station Eleven. Set in an isolated Newfoundland community, the thriller combines supernatural horror, mystery and family drama as a mysterious sea creature begins terrorising the town.

The series arrives on Netflix on October 8, 2026, with all six episodes available to watch from launch.

A Threat From Beneath The Water

At the centre of the story is Calvin Penney, a warm-hearted but stubborn fisherman living in a small Newfoundland town. Decades after his father’s unexplained death, Calvin is still carrying the weight of what happened.

His already difficult life takes a terrifying turn when a mysterious creature emerges from the ocean and begins threatening the isolated community.

With his family and the town’s way of life at risk, Calvin is forced to confront the danger rather than run from it. His son Wade, played by Charlie Heaton, is among those closest to him as the strange events begin to escalate.

Calvin eventually teams up with Fonda Howander, a marine researcher played by Mackenzie Davis. Together, they attempt to understand what is happening beneath the water while uncovering secrets connected to the community and its past.

Stokes will be familiar to viewers from Bridgerton, while Campbell recently appeared in The Monkey. Heaton, meanwhile, brings his experience from Stranger Things to a story that places him in a very different kind of supernatural danger.

The series also uses practical locations to heighten the mystery. Netflix’s first-look material includes an unsettling image of a house being dragged across the water before disappearing beneath the surface — an opening image creator Jesse McKeown described as dreamlike and haunting.
