A Florida mother enjoyed an impressive run on Wheel of Fortune, winning a dream vacation and more than $23,000 in prizes. But her appearance ended in frustration when she came painfully close to solving the final puzzle and missed the chance to increase her total winnings to $63,179.
Doniece Talley, from Gainesville, Florida, dominated much of the October 1 episode, building a substantial lead over her opponents and securing a trip to Montenegro.
However, the Bonus Round proved considerably more difficult.
Despite correctly identifying several words and coming close to the solution, Talley struggled with one crucial part of the puzzle as the clock counted down.
Host Ryan Seacrest could only offer his sympathy when the answer was finally revealed.
A Strong Start For The Florida Mother
Talley competed against Rachel Ring, from Oceanside, New York, and Robert Ford, from Clive, Iowa.
Each contestant brought a different personality to the game.
Ring, a fashion enthusiast, explained that she enjoys watching Wheel of Fortune partly because of Vanna White’s outfits.
Ford works as a playwright, composer and theater producer.
Talley, meanwhile, shared a family tradition that makes travel especially meaningful to her.
Every year, she and her husband take an anniversary trip together while their children stay with their grandparents.
She also spoke about her son Amir, who affectionately refers to Wheel of Fortune as “The Letter Show.”
The opening Fortune Frenzy puzzles gave all three contestants an opportunity to make an early impression.
Ring performed particularly well, solving two puzzles.
Talley and Ford each solved one.
Ford nearly added another to his total but made an incorrect guess on the first word of the final Fortune Frenzy puzzle. He was unable to correct his answer before time expired.
Although Ring initially had the advantage in the rapid-fire rounds, Talley soon took control of the competition.
Talley Builds A Commanding Lead
Talley’s first major success came during the Same Letter category.
The puzzle required contestants to identify a phrase featuring words beginning with the same letter.
Talley correctly solved:
TENTS, TRAILERS, TRAILS, & TREES
The answer earned her $10,250, giving her a strong financial position early in the game.
She continued her successful run during the following puzzle.
With just three letters remaining on the board, Talley correctly identified:
ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS
That brought her accumulated winnings to $12,300.
Her confidence and ability to recognize incomplete phrases were proving valuable, allowing her to build a lead while her opponents struggled to keep pace.
But her biggest reward of the regular game was still to come.
A Dream Trip To Montenegro
The Prize Puzzle gave Talley another opportunity to increase her winnings.
This time, the answer was:

Talley solved it correctly and won a vacation to Montenegro.
The prize was particularly fitting given her annual tradition of traveling with her husband to celebrate their anniversary.
With the trip included, her total winnings rose to $23,179.
The victory placed her in a commanding position heading into the final stages of the competition.
Ring and Ford continued to compete for additional money, but neither managed to overtake her.
During the Triple Toss-Up round, Ring solved two of the three puzzles, while Ford correctly answered the remaining one.
Ford then secured the final regular-round puzzle with:

That brought his final winnings to $6,300.
Ring finished with $6,000.
Talley, however, remained comfortably ahead with $23,179, making her the episode’s champion.
Her victory also earned her a place in the Bonus Round, where she had the opportunity to add a substantial cash prize to her winnings.
The Bonus Round Puzzle That Cost Her $40,000
For the final challenge, Talley selected the category What Are You Doing?
Her mother, Odessa, had accompanied her to the show and was there to support her during the decisive round.
As usual, the game automatically revealed the letters R, S, T, L, N and E.
Talley then selected four additional letters:
D, C, W and O
After those letters were placed on the board, the puzzle appeared as follows:

With only seconds available, she continued searching for the answer.
Unfortunately, time expired before she could complete the phrase.
The correct solution was:
IMPROVING OUR CHANCES
Talley had identified the general structure of the answer but could not find the word that would have completed it.
The mistake was particularly frustrating because she had already demonstrated strong puzzle-solving abilities throughout the episode.
Ryan Seacrest Reveals The $40,000 Prize
After the clock ran out, Ryan Seacrest comforted Talley.
“You were so close,” he told her before giving her a hug.
The host then opened the prize envelope to reveal what she could have won.
Inside was $40,000.
Had Talley solved the puzzle, that additional money would have increased her total winnings from $23,179 to $63,179.
Instead, she had to settle for the money and prizes earned during the regular game.
Seacrest remained encouraging, reminding her that she had still enjoyed a successful appearance.
“Not bad for a 30-minute show. Enjoy your trips,” he said.
Although Talley missed the substantial Bonus Round prize, she was leaving with an impressive total and a vacation to look forward to.
