The 1% Club leaves 15 contestants stumped by tricky animal question. Could you solve it in 30 seconds?
The 1% Club sent 15 contestants home after a deceptively simple animal puzzle left them struggling to spot the pattern. With only 30 seconds to work it out, could you find the answer?
Hosted by Lee Mack, the popular ITV quiz show challenges contestants with questions designed to test logic, observation and common sense rather than straightforward general knowledge.
This particular puzzle was the show’s 60% question, meaning just over half of the population would be expected to answer it correctly.

Can you work out which animal comes next?
Lee asked the remaining contestants:
Which animal replaces the question mark?

On screen was a sequence featuring an ostrich, horse and ladybird, followed by a question mark.
Players were given three possible answers:
- A) Snake
- B) Giraffe
- C) Spider
They had just 30 seconds to decide.
When the countdown ended, 15 contestants had chosen incorrectly and were eliminated from the game.
The answer was C, spider.
The solution comes down to the number of legs. An ostrich has two legs, a horse has four, and a ladybird has six. Following that pattern, the next animal needs to have eight legs.
That makes the spider the correct choice.

The 1% Club is known for deceptively difficult questions
Since making its debut three years ago, The 1% Club has become known for puzzles that can look remarkably straightforward until the clock starts ticking.
Another episode saw 30 contestants eliminated by a seemingly simple question involving smiley faces.
Players were shown 18 emoji-style faces, arranged in three rows of six, and asked:
Are there more happy faces or sad faces?
When time ran out, Lee revealed that 30 people had given the wrong answer and were therefore out of the game.
The correct answer was happy. There were 10 happy faces compared with eight sad faces.
Lee then delivered one of his trademark jokes, pointing out that there were now 30 sad ones after the contestants had been eliminated.

18 players fell for an alphabet puzzle
Another question managed to eliminate 18 people, this time testing contestants on consecutive letters of the alphabet.
Players were shown four words and asked to identify the one that did not contain three consecutive letters from the alphabet.
The four choices were:
- Unopenable
- Understandable
- Unquestionable
- Undefineable
The correct answer was C, Unquestionable.
The trick was hidden within the spelling of the other three words.
Unopenable contains NOP, three consecutive letters of the alphabet. Undefineable contains DEF, while Understandable contains RST.

That left Unquestionable as the only word without a sequence of three consecutive alphabetical letters.
The animal puzzle follows the same principle that has made the programme so challenging: the answer can appear obvious once the pattern is revealed, but finding that pattern under a strict time limit is another matter entirely.
The 1% Club airs on ITV1 and ITVX.
