Bad Bunny’s night on Saturday Night Live already had plenty of star power, but one unexpected entrance turned an over-the-top Spanish-language soap opera parody into an even bigger surprise.
In the middle of a melodramatic family confrontation, the sketch introduced the patriarch of the fictional Padilla family. The actor stepping into the role was hardly someone viewers might have expected: Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger.
The rock legend’s surprise appearance came during Bad Bunny’s October 21, 2023 episode, when the Puerto Rican superstar served as both host and musical guest. Jagger ultimately appeared in two sketches during the broadcast, marking his first SNL appearance in more than a decade.
Bad Bunny Goes Full Telenovela
The sketch, titled “Telenovela,” placed Bad Bunny and cast member Marcello Hernández at the center of a deliberately exaggerated Spanish-language drama.
They portrayed brothers Luis and Tomas Padilla in the fictional El Pasión de las Padillas, complete with the intense confrontations, dramatic reactions and family secrets associated with classic telenovelas.
The comedy also played with the idea of filming the production itself.
Bowen Yang appeared as the director, repeatedly trying to get the scene under control as the performers struggled to deliver exactly what he wanted.
Punkie Johnson added another layer to the chaos as Latina actress Latina Jefferson, whose character’s limited Spanish created a running joke throughout the sketch. Her attempts to participate eventually became so disruptive that the production took an unexpected turn of its own.
Then the Padilla family drama suddenly gained a very famous father.
Mick Jagger Makes His Unexpected Entrance
As Bad Bunny and Hernández’s characters confronted each other, the scene called for their father to arrive.
Jagger walked onto the set dressed for the melodramatic role, instantly drawing a huge reaction from the studio audience.
The Rolling Stones singer played the patriarch with complete commitment to the joke, joining Bad Bunny and Hernández in the increasingly ridiculous family confrontation.
His appearance was particularly effective because the sketch did not build toward Jagger as its obvious centerpiece. Instead, he arrived unexpectedly in the middle of a scene that was already becoming increasingly chaotic.
Jagger also delivered his lines in Spanish, fully embracing the telenovela format rather than simply appearing as himself for a quick celebrity cameo.
The escalating confrontation eventually became physical in intentionally exaggerated soap-opera fashion, with Jagger’s character getting caught up in the absurdity alongside his fictional sons.
The Sketch Keeps Getting More Absurd
Jagger’s arrival was not the end of the joke.
The production continued unraveling as Punkie Johnson’s character struggled with her Spanish lines, despite the director’s increasingly frustrated attempts to keep filming.
Rather than bringing the scene under control, each correction only created another opportunity for the sketch to become more ridiculous.
The result was a parody built around several overlapping ideas: exaggerated telenovela acting, language misunderstandings, behind-the-scenes production problems and the sheer incongruity of seeing one of rock music’s most recognizable frontmen suddenly playing the father of Bad Bunny and Marcello Hernández.
For viewers who had not been expecting Jagger, his entrance provided the biggest surprise.
But it was not his only appearance of the evening.
Jagger Returned For Another Sketch
Later in the episode, Jagger appeared again in a different role during the sketch “Convent Meeting.”
This time, he played a nun as Bad Bunny appeared as a priest investigating unusual behavior at a convent.
The second cameo confirmed that Jagger had not simply dropped by for a few seconds of screen time. He had become one of the night’s recurring surprise guests.
Lady Gaga also made an unexpected appearance during the episode, introducing Bad Bunny’s musical performance of “Un Preview.”
For Jagger, the episode represented a return to familiar territory.
He had previously hosted Saturday Night Live and appeared on the program numerous times over the decades, both with The Rolling Stones and in solo appearances. His October 2023 cameos marked his first time appearing on the show since 2012.
A Big Weekend For Bad Bunny And Mick Jagger
The timing of the surprise collaboration was particularly fitting because both performers arrived at SNL while promoting major new music.
Bad Bunny had released his fifth solo studio album, Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana, on October 13, just over a week before his hosting appearance.
The 22-track record included “Monaco,” “Fina,” “Hibiki,” “Mr. October” and “Where She Goes,” and followed his hugely successful 2022 album Un Verano Sin Ti.
His SNL appearance therefore came during another major moment in a career that had already transformed him into one of the world’s biggest streaming artists.
Jagger was having a significant release week of his own.
The Rolling Stones released Hackney Diamonds on October 20, one day before the SNL broadcast.
The record was the band’s first studio album of original material since A Bigger Bang arrived in 2005. It also featured contributions from a remarkable collection of guests, including Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder and Elton John.
The album represented another chapter for a band whose career had already stretched across more than six decades.
Two Generations Of Music Collide On ‘SNL’
That made the sight of Jagger and Bad Bunny sharing an intentionally ridiculous telenovela scene even more unusual.
One arrived as the frontman of a band that helped define rock music beginning in the 1960s. The other had become one of the defining global artists of a completely different musical generation.
Yet Saturday Night Live did not bring them together for a musical duet.
Instead, Mick Jagger walked into a fictional Spanish-language family drama and became Bad Bunny’s father.
It was precisely the kind of unpredictable celebrity pairing the show has used throughout its history, and Jagger’s willingness to commit fully to the absurd premise helped make the cameo more than a simple audience surprise.
