Paul McCartney hadn’t performed “I Want to Hold Your Hand” live since the Beatles era. More than six decades later, it took one very special request from Taylor Swift to persuade him to bring it back.

McCartney has finally spoken about performing at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding, revealing during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that the bride herself asked him to sing the Beatles classic.

“She asked me to do it,” McCartney explained.

But Swift didn’t simply request that McCartney perform at her wedding.

According to him, she specifically chose “I Want to Hold Your Hand” — a song he hadn’t performed live since singing it with the Beatles back in 1964.

And when the moment arrived, Swift was standing onstage beside him.

Taylor Swift Personally Chose the Beatles Song

McCartney’s appearance at Swift and Kelce’s Madison Square Garden wedding had previously been reported, but guests have largely kept details from the ceremony private.

His conversation with Jimmy Kimmel offered a rare glimpse into how the extraordinary performance happened.

Swift apparently knew exactly which Beatles song she wanted.

“I Want to Hold Your Hand” was released during the earliest explosion of Beatlemania and became one of the songs most closely associated with the band’s arrival in America.

Yet despite remaining one of the Beatles’ most famous recordings, McCartney had left it out of his live repertoire for more than six decades.

Swift’s wedding changed that.

McCartney also revealed that Swift joined him onstage during the performance.

And he encouraged her to make the song personal.

“I said, ‘You should sing along, and you should sing it to your man,’” McCartney recalled.

The comment created an extraordinary image: Swift beside one of the surviving Beatles, singing a song about holding someone’s hand directly to the man she had just married.

McCartney didn’t clarify whether the moment became a formal duet between the pair, leaving some details of the performance inside the wedding itself.

Still, the significance was difficult to miss.

A Beatles song that McCartney hadn’t performed live since 1964 returned for one of the biggest moments of Swift and Kelce’s lives — because Swift personally asked him to sing it.

McCartney Had Plenty More Stories for Jimmy Kimmel

The wedding wasn’t the only subject McCartney discussed during his appearance.

He also spoke about the upcoming special edition of The Boys of Dungeon Lane, his experience duetting with fellow Beatle Ringo Starr, and his Wings documentary Man on the Run.

But another concert story provided one of the interview’s funniest moments.

McCartney revisited the time Larry David refused to join the crowd singing “Hey Jude” during one of his concerts.

David had previously explained his refusal to Jimmy Kimmel in characteristically dry fashion, joking about the idea of joining the famous “na na na” singalong.

McCartney later confronted him about it.

“I talked to him about it afterward,” McCartney recalled. “I said, ‘How come Larry?’ He said, ‘I didn’t want to do it.’ So he didn’t do it.”

Kimmel subsequently asked whether McCartney would ever invite David to another concert.

His answer was wonderfully brief:

“Never.”

One Wedding Request Brought a Beatles Classic Back

For an artist with a catalog stretching across more than six decades, McCartney has performed many Beatles classics thousands of times.

That makes the circumstances surrounding “I Want to Hold Your Hand” especially remarkable.

It wasn’t revived for a major tour.

It wasn’t brought back for an anniversary concert.

According to McCartney, it returned because Taylor Swift asked him to sing it at her wedding — and specifically requested the song herself.

Sixty-two years after Paul McCartney last performed “I Want to Hold Your Hand” live with the Beatles, Taylor Swift brought it back for her wedding. And with Swift standing beside him as he encouraged her to sing the words to Travis Kelce, one of Beatlemania’s defining songs suddenly became part of a very different love story.
