She Thought She’d Finally Caught a Break… Then Everything Started to Unravel. A Four-Part Mystery Thriller About a Struggling Single Mum Is Leaving Viewers Hooked

‘An exceptional mystery thriller’: Kara Tointon’s chilling series Captivated is now on Netflix

A seemingly perfect job offer quickly turns sinister in Captivated, the four-part mystery thriller starring Kara Tointon and Allen Leech. Originally shown on Channel 5 in 2024 under the title Too Good to Be True, the series has now found a new home on Netflix.

For anyone looking for a short thriller packed with secrets, suspicion and twists, the series makes for an easy binge. All four episodes are available on Netflix from Sunday 21 December.

A dream job with a darker side

Tointon plays Rachel, a single mother struggling to stay afloat while working long hours as a cleaner to support her son.

Her circumstances suddenly appear to change when she is approached by wealthy businessman Elliot, played by Downton Abbey star Allen Leech. He offers her a job with better pay and fewer hours, giving Rachel the kind of financial breathing room she desperately needs.

At first, the offer seems almost too good to refuse.

But as Rachel becomes increasingly involved in Elliot’s life, her doubts begin to grow. What initially looks like an opportunity to improve her and her son’s lives soon raises uncomfortable questions about Elliot’s intentions.

The official Netflix synopsis similarly describes a woman whose lucrative job as a housekeeper for a wealthy businessman comes with a potentially impossible price.

Kara Tointon leads the cast

Best known for roles including EastEnders and Mr Selfridge, Tointon takes the central role of Rachel, while Leech plays the mysterious Elliot.

The supporting cast includes Charlie Hodson-Prior, who appears in Dune: Prophecy, as well as Sara Powell, known for Silent Witness and Unforgotten. Taj Atwal, who has appeared in Line of Duty and The Syndicate, and Cold Feet star John Thomson also feature, alongside Colleen Keogh.

Tointon previously described Elliot to Radio Times as a kind of “Prince Charming”, explaining that he initially appears genuine, kind and well-intentioned.

That impression, however, does not last forever.

As Tointon put it, there initially appears to be nothing wrong, but once Rachel starts looking beneath the surface, “everything unravels”.

Originally released as Too Good to Be True

The series first aired on Channel 5 in the UK in February 2024 under the title Too Good to Be True. It consists of four episodes and was later released internationally under the title Captivated.

The central mystery revolves around Rachel’s growing involvement with Elliot and the increasingly unsettling circumstances surrounding her new job. The short episode count also makes it particularly suited to a weekend or evening binge.

The series has since appeared on several streaming platforms under the Captivated title before arriving on Netflix in the UK on 21 December 2025.

Viewers had mixed reactions

When Too Good to Be True first aired, viewers on IMDb offered a range of opinions.

One viewer called it a “solid drama”, praising the performances and the way the tension builds, while noting that it may not be the greatest thriller ever made. They also pointed to the four-episode format as a reason it was easy to watch without feeling overly stretched.

Another viewer felt parts of the plot were predictable because they drew on familiar thriller territory, but said the story included enough twists to keep things interesting.

A third reaction was similarly measured, describing the series as watchable despite some criticism. The main complaint was that the opening two episodes felt slow and predictable, with the pace improving considerably from the third episode onwards.

The series currently carries a 5.7/10 rating on IMDb, based on more than 1,700 ratings.

Is Captivated worth adding to your watchlist?

If you’re after a compact British thriller built around a mysterious wealthy man, an apparently perfect job and a protagonist who gradually realises that something is not quite right, Captivated fits the bill.

With Kara Tointon and Allen Leech at the centre of the story and only four episodes to get through, it is an uncomplicated choice for viewers who want a mystery they can finish in a single sitting or over a couple of nights.

Captivated is available to stream on Netflix from Sunday 21 December 2025.
