Whoopi Goldberg has paid an emotional tribute to her longtime friend and Star Trek costar Sir Patrick Stewart following reports of the legendary actor’s death at the age of 86.
The 70-year-old actress and The View moderator shared a touching Instagram post on Friday, remembering the man she worked alongside for years on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Rather than writing a lengthy farewell, Goldberg chose a simple image and a few words that carried special meaning for those familiar with their decades-long friendship.
Whoopi Goldberg’s Emotional Goodbye to Patrick Stewart
Goldberg posted a photograph showing miniature figures of herself and Stewart standing side by side, representing their beloved Star Trek characters.
“See you on the next holodeck,” she wrote, referencing the fictional technology featured throughout the science-fiction franchise.
She ended her tribute with a simple “RIP.”

Stewart became internationally recognized for portraying Captain Jean-Luc Picard, while Goldberg played Guinan, the wise bartender and trusted confidante aboard the USS Enterprise-D.
The pair worked together on Star Trek: The Next Generation between 1988 and 1993, developing a friendship that continued long after their original television appearances.
Their connection was also evident during Stewart’s visits to Goldberg’s daytime talk show, The View.
The Surprise That Nearly Brought Whoopi to Tears
One of their most memorable public moments occurred in January 2020, when Stewart appeared on The View with an unexpected invitation.
During the broadcast, he personally asked Goldberg to return as Guinan for the second season of Star Trek: Picard.
The surprise left Goldberg visibly emotional.
“I’ve said this on the show before, but Star Trek was one of the great experiences, from the beginning to the end,” she told Stewart.
“I had the best, best, best time ever.”
Goldberg accepted the invitation and reprised her character in the show’s second season, which premiered in 2022.
The reunion gave audiences another opportunity to see Guinan and Picard together decades after their original adventures.
Their Friendship Continued Beyond Star Trek

Goldberg and Stewart reunited again in early 2023 when The View welcomed several members of the Next Generation cast.
Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden and Michael Dorn joined the pair for the special gathering, celebrating the enduring legacy of the series.
Stewart had previously admitted that he was initially reluctant to return to the role of Picard.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly before the spin-off premiered, he explained that he believed he had already explored everything he could with the character.
However, the creative team’s plans for a different chapter eventually persuaded him to return.
His decision also created the opportunity for another onscreen reunion with Goldberg.
A Friendship That Lasted for Decades
For Goldberg, Star Trek was never simply another acting credit.
Her emotional response to Stewart’s 2020 invitation demonstrated how much the series and its cast continued to mean to her.
Their friendship extended across television appearances, cast reunions and a shared history with one of science fiction’s most recognizable franchises.
Now, Goldberg’s brief Instagram tribute has brought that history back into focus.
With just a photograph and a reference to the fictional world they once shared, Goldberg offered a deeply personal goodbye to a colleague and friend whose place in her life extended far beyond the Enterprise.
