Harlan Coben’s Caught Is a Six-Episode Netflix Mystery Set in Patagonia

A respected journalist, a missing teenager and a seemingly trustworthy man at the center of the investigation form the uneasy foundation of Netflix’s Caught, a six-part thriller adapted from Harlan Coben’s novel.

Released globally on Netflix on March 26, 2025, the Argentine series brings Coben’s familiar mystery formula to Patagonia, following a journalist whose investigation becomes increasingly personal as she searches for the truth.

The series stars Soledad Villamil as Ema Garay, alongside Alberto Ammann and Juan Minujín. It also marks the first Latin American adaptation of a Harlan Coben novel.

A Journalist Investigates a Teenager’s Disappearance

The story unfolds in San Carlos de Bariloche, a city in Argentina’s Patagonia region.

Ema Garay has built her reputation in digital media by exposing criminals who have managed to evade justice. Her latest investigation takes a disturbing turn when a 16-year-old girl, Martina Schulz, disappears.

The case quickly draws Ema toward Leo Mercer, a respected figure in the community who becomes the prime suspect. But as Ema searches for answers, the investigation begins connecting seemingly unrelated people and secrets — while also forcing her to confront painful aspects of her own past.

Netflix describes Caught as a gritty, slow-burning mystery built around journalism, investigation and crime. Its six episodes run for roughly 44 to 62 minutes, making the series relatively easy to watch in a single weekend.

Soledad Villamil Leads an International Cast

Villamil anchors the series as Ema, with Alberto Ammann playing Leo Mercer and Juan Minujín portraying Marcos Brown.

The supporting cast includes Matías Recalt as Ema’s son Bruno, Carmela Rivero as Martina, Fernán Mirás, Mike Amigorena and several other Argentine performers.

The series was directed by Miguel Cohan and Hernán Goldfrid, with Cohan also serving as showrunner. The scripts were written by Miguel Cohan, Ana Cohan, María Meira and Gonzalo Salaya. Vanessa Ragone produced the series, while Harlan Coben served as an executive producer.

The First Latin American Coben Adaptation

Cought — titled Atrapados in Spanish — represents a significant expansion of Coben’s relationship with Netflix.

The author’s novels had already been adapted for the platform in several countries, including The Stranger, The Woods, The Innocent, Stay Close, Hold Tight, Gone for Good and Fool Me Once. Caught took that approach into Latin America for the first time.

Rather than transplanting the story into another familiar setting, the production was made in Argentina and filmed around Bariloche and Buenos Aires. The surrounding Patagonian landscape becomes an important part of the series’ atmosphere, giving the mystery a distinctly local identity.

Netflix says the production involved more than 400 Argentine professionals and technicians. Filming lasted 90 days across 21 locations, including Nahuel Huapi National Park, while the production booked 4,402 hotel nights in Bariloche.

Why the Patagonian Setting Matters

Bariloche gives Caught a very different visual identity from many of Netflix’s other Coben adaptations.

The city and surrounding Patagonia landscape provide both striking scenery and a sense of isolation that suits a story built around a disappearance, competing suspicions and secrets that gradually surface.

The location also reinforces the contrast at the heart of the story: Ema is trying to expose the truth while the community around her becomes increasingly difficult to read.

That combination of investigative journalism, a missing teenager and an apparently respected suspect gives the series several mysteries to work through at once.

The Twists Come Quickly

Cought follows the structure audiences have come to associate with Coben’s thrillers, where a seemingly straightforward investigation gradually opens into a much larger web of relationships and unanswered questions.

Netflix’s episode descriptions show the mystery escalating throughout the six chapters. Ema’s investigation into an online predator becomes entangled with Martina’s disappearance, while Leo goes on the run. Later episodes introduce new discoveries, reveal more about the connections between key characters and push Ema closer to danger.

By the final episode, Ema is fighting both for her life and for the truth, while a vigil for Martina produces another potentially significant lead.

A Mixed Critical Reception, But Plenty of Mystery Appeal

Cought has received a mixed response from critics.

Rotten Tomatoes currently lists the first season at 43% from seven critic reviews, while its audience score stands at 55% from fewer than 50 ratings.

Some critics have nevertheless responded positively to the series’ puzzle-box construction. La Nación gave it four out of five stars and described it as a striking and compelling puzzle, while LatinaMedia.Co called it an “incendiary delight.” Other reviews have criticized the series for its storytelling and the way some twists are introduced.

That split is worth keeping in mind for viewers deciding whether the series is for them. Caught is firmly aimed at audiences who enjoy mysteries driven by secrets, reversals and multiple suspects rather than straightforward procedural storytelling.

Where Caught Fits in Coben’s Netflix World

Cought arrived during a particularly busy period for Coben adaptations on Netflix.

The series was one of several adaptations of his novels released or announced around the same period, following Missing You and Just One Look, while projects including Run Away and I Will Find You expanded the author’s Netflix slate.

Netflix has described Coben as one of its major international thriller collaborators, with his books adapted by creative teams in different countries and languages.

That international approach is particularly visible in Caught. The basic ingredients — a disappearance, a suspicious figure and a determined investigator — remain recognizable, but the Argentine cast, Spanish-language production and Patagonian setting give the story its own identity.
