If you’re on the lookout for your next crime drama binge-watch, this series seems to have flown under the radar somewhat, despite its glowing reviews.
Based on a hugely popular series of books by Swedish writer Viveca Sten, the TV show is an adaptation of the murder mystery novels Hidden in Snow and Hidden in the Shadows.
The gripping stories fall under the niche Nordic noir genre, which sees crime fiction usually written from a police point of view, set against the backdrop of a Scandinavian or Nordic setting.
Released in 2025, The Åre Murders series brings the beloved stories to life on screen, following a series of intriguing characters. At the very heart of the show is a detective named Hanna, who, after the breakdown of her relationship, takes an absence of leave and flees to her sister’s holiday home in a Swedish ski resort known as Åre.
Suddenly, a girl goes missing, and with the local police department understaffed, she can’t help but intervene with the investigation. Officer Daniel reluctantly accepts the help, apprehensively making Hanna his new partner, and yet as time goes on, they both struggle to know if they can truly trust one another.

As the two detectives steam into the snowy town in Sweden, the truth uncovers a haunting network of human traffickers and devastating family secrets.
A critic described the show simply by saying:”This is an edge-of-your-seat crime series that spans two separate murders in one small, snowy, Swedish town.”
Playing the role of Hannah is well-known Swedish actress Carla Sehn, alongside Kardo Razzazi as detective Daniel. It also features Amalia Holm Bjelke, Charlie Gustafsson and Frida Argento in a Swedish show that is available to watch with English subtitles, as well as dubbed versions.
Meanwhile, a satisfied viewer wrote a review on Rotten Tomatoes, demanding more to sink their teeth into. They wrote: “Loved it!! Can’t believe there were only 5 episodes; I was literally so hooked. I was devastated when I had finished watching this.
“Really good acting and such good storylines, really very gripping along with beautiful landscapes to see. A must-watch, and I hope they keep making more.”

According to WhatsonNetflix, The Åre Murders is set to return with a second season, scheduled to arrive at some point in 2026, with two whole new cases for the investigators to get to grips with. Although no official announcements have been made about the story being developed further, fans sit with high anticipation.
Another viewer shared their thoughts on the show, writing: “Beautiful, moody setting, very good acting, good character development, and an unpredictable and gripping story.”
One person made note of how the cold scenery in Sweden helped to add an eerie feel to the storyline. They said: “Good enough, for sure. Decent plots, pacing, and character acting. Chilly Nordic scenery is a lovely match for the grim crimes.”
