Finding a good comedy to watch can be tricky. Past the hey-days of Friends and the brief resurgence of ensemble in the 2010s with shows like New Girl and Parks and Recreation, comedy shows seem to have crept into the shadows a bit.

However, a new show has sprung out of the darkness and taken a place as one of my favourite new comedies in years. Adults, created by Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw and produced by Nick Kroll (Big Mouth) follows a group of hapless 20-somethings living together in the back end of New York.

The group dynamic reminds me a lot of my own early 20s when everyone I knew was falling headfirst into careers they weren’t sure about, desperately trying to keep up with everyone else’s relationships and most of all, trying to grow up.

It’s easy to watch, with just eight episodes in the first season released in 2025 and a further eight to premiere at the end of this month, plus a special prequel which aired July 31.

The episodes are only 20 minutes or so, and they are packed with laugh out loud moments as well as a couple of hide behind your hands cringe bits.

The show has a 7.4 rating on IMDB and reviewers say it is “the next big thing”.

One person wrote: “It feels like getting on board a plane right before it takes off. The biggest issue with the show is simply that there isn’t more of it, I would’ve watched for hours on end. It’s so rare to find a show as irreverently funny and sentimentally sweet at the same time, but somehow this balances both masterfully.”

Another said: “This FX comedy about five twenty-somethings sharing a house in Queens is the most I’ve laughed-and cringed-in ages. It captures the messiness of early adulthood with a blend of absurd humor and genuine emotion.”
