2026 Emmy Awards: Matthew Rhys Makes History as Widow’s Bay and The Pitt Take Top Honors

The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards delivered a night of major wins, historic firsts and a few surprises, with Widow’s Bay emerging as the night’s comedy powerhouse and The Pitt once again claiming television’s top drama prize.

Matthew Rhys was at the center of the celebrations. The 51-year-old Welsh actor made Emmy history by becoming the first male performer to win two lead acting awards in different categories during the same ceremony.

Rhys first took home Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Netflix’s The Beast in Me. Later in the evening, he added Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay.

His comedy win came against Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for Wonder Man, Steve Carell for Rooster, Jason Segel for Shrinking and Martin Short for Only Murders in the Building, as well as his Widow’s Bay co-star Dale Dickey.

Matthew Rhys Makes Emmy History

Rhys plays Tom Loftis in Widow’s Bay, the mayor of the isolated island community at the center of Katie Dippold’s horror-comedy.

Tom originally comes from the mainland and is skeptical of the islanders’ beliefs surrounding its supposed curse. A widower and father to a son named Evan, he finds himself increasingly caught up in the strange events affecting the community.

After securing his second Emmy of the evening, Rhys used his acceptance speech to humorously acknowledge Dippold and the cast and crew behind the series.

His earlier victory for The Beast in Me came after he defeated Riz Ahmed for Bait, Jason Bateman for Black Rabbit, Charlie Hunnam for Monster: The Ed Gein Story and Oscar Isaac for Beef.

In the Netflix psychological thriller, Rhys plays Nile Jarvis, the son of a wealthy real-estate magnate who moves next door to Aggie Wiggs, played by Claire Danes, in Oyster Bay, New York. Nile relocates there with his second wife while questions surrounding the alleged killing of his first wife continue to cast a shadow over the story.

The double victory marked a particularly notable night for Rhys, who had previously won an Emmy in 2018 for The Americans.

Widow’s Bay Takes the Comedy Crown

Widow’s Bay continued its remarkable run by winning Outstanding Comedy Series, beating Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Hacks, Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Nobody Wants This, Only Murders in the Building and Shrinking.

The series had already established itself as one of the ceremony’s biggest winners during the Creative Arts Emmys, collecting eight awards. Its story follows a New England island community dealing with eerie and unexplained phenomena.

Stephen Root also delivered a surprise victory for Widow’s Bay, taking Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series over nominees including Harrison Ford for Shrinking. Kate O’Flynn won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for the show.

The Pitt Wins Best Drama Again

While Widow’s Bay dominated the comedy categories, The Pitt once again came out on top in drama.

The HBO Max medical drama won Outstanding Drama Series, repeating its victory from 2025. The show entered the 2026 ceremony with a leading 25 nominations, the most of any program.

Noah Wyle, who stars as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, also won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for the second consecutive year.

The series faced competition from The Diplomat, The Gilded Age, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Paradise, Pluribus, Slow Horses and Your Friends & Neighbors.

Creator R. Scott Gemmill accepted the drama series award and used his speech to emphasize the importance of telling honest stories at a time when it can be increasingly difficult to distinguish reality from misinformation and artificial intelligence.

The show also collected several other Emmys during the awards season, including awards for casting, prosthetic makeup, original music and lyrics, and guest acting.

Rhea Seehorn Scores a Major First

Another standout moment came when Rhea Seehorn won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Pluribus.

The 54-year-old actress defeated Zendaya for Euphoria, Carrie Coon for The Gilded Age, Chase Infiniti for The Testaments and Keri Russell for The Diplomat.

In Pluribus, Seehorn plays Carol Sturka, one of the few people immune to a mysterious phenomenon that has transformed much of the world into a state of forced happiness. Carol must uncover what is happening while searching for a way to save humanity from what appears to be artificial bliss.

During her acceptance speech, Seehorn also praised her fellow nominees and highlighted the support she received from Russell.

Jean Smart Makes Emmy History, Too

Jean Smart added another milestone to an already remarkable career by winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks.

It was her fifth consecutive Emmy for the role, tying the record for the most acting wins in television history with eight overall. Hacks had entered the ceremony with 24 nominations, the most ever for a comedy series.

The night also featured major recognition for a number of other productions and performers, but the biggest storylines belonged to Widow’s Bay, The Pitt and the actors who turned their nominations into history-making victories.

For Matthew Rhys in particular, the evening will stand out as the night he became the first male actor to win two lead acting Emmys across different categories in a single ceremony.
