Netflix is bringing The Beast in Me back for a second season, with Claire Danes set to reprise her role as writer Aggie Wiggs after the thriller’s first season earned 21 Emmy nominations.

The renewal also marks the beginning of a new exclusive creative partnership between Netflix and Howard Gordon, the series writer and co-showrunner. Gordon will return for Season 2 alongside Daniel Pearle.

The announcement gives fans another chance to see Danes’ Aggie drawn into the dangerous world surrounding her billionaire neighbour, Nile Jarvis, played by Matthew Rhys.

In the first season, Aggie is a writer still struggling with the devastating death of her son when she becomes fascinated by Nile, a wealthy and controversial neighbour with a troubling past.

A New Netflix Partnership For Howard Gordon

Season 2 will be the first project under a new exclusive creative partnership between Netflix and Gordon.

Known for his work on Homeland, Gordon previously collaborated with Danes on the acclaimed series. He will now serve as co-showrunner on The Beast in Me alongside Daniel Pearle.

Netflix’s head of Scripted Series, Jinny Howe, said the company was delighted to bring the series back and welcome Gordon into the Netflix family through the new partnership.

Howe also praised the performances in the first season, particularly Danes’ work as Aggie, while highlighting Rhys’ Emmy win and the work of Gordon, Gabe Rotter and the wider cast and crew.

The renewal comes after a strong first season for The Beast in Me.

The series debuted at No. 1 on Netflix’s Global Top 10 and reached the Top 10 in 88 countries. It accumulated 43 million views in seven weeks, according to Netflix.

The thriller follows Aggie as she becomes increasingly obsessed with understanding Nile Jarvis, a powerful real estate figure who was once a suspect in the disappearance of his wife. The relationship between the two characters forms the centre of the show’s mystery and psychological tension.

The show’s success also carried into awards season.

At the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, Claire Danes received a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series, while Matthew Rhys won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for his performance as Nile Jarvis.

The victory marked a significant moment for Rhys, who became the first actor to win in both the Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and Lead Actor in a Comedy Series categories.

The series also received recognition for its music, with composers Sean Callery and Sara Barone winning the Creative Arts Emmy for Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special (Original Dramatic Score).
